How We Research
Every guide here answers one question: will this cleaner keep your pool clean without making more work for you? The answer depends on your pool, your pump and the debris you deal with.
This is how we work it out.
1. We start with your pool
A robot built for a large inground pool is the wrong pick for a soft-sided above ground pool. A suction cleaner is no use if your pump is too small to pull it.
So we check the pool types and sizes each maker lists, the surfaces it's made for, and what it needs from your equipment. When your pool narrows the choice, we say so up front.
2. We compare specs and features
For robots, we look at corded or cordless power, runtime, filter type, wall and waterline coverage, and the weight you'll lift out of the water.
For suction and pressure cleaners, we look at hose length, what pump or booster pump it needs, and how it handles leaves and sand. Makers describe their cleaners in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim.
3. We read owner feedback
We read what owners report after weeks and seasons of use. We look for patterns like missed spots, stuck cleaners, tangled cords, clogged filters and short battery life.
One bad review doesn't sink a cleaner. A repeated problem does.
4. We score each cleaner
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A cleaner can score high in one guide and lower in another, because the needs differ.
Scores spread out on purpose, and a perfect 10 is rare.
5. We keep guides current
Cleaners get new versions, and some models leave stores. We check model numbers so you don't mix up close names, and we only link new units.
We skip any model with a known safety recall, and we check the CPSC recall list for battery-powered robots. When a guide changes, the "Updated on" date at the top changes too.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have run every cleaner in our own pool.
Pool cleaners run on power and water together. Follow the maker's manual for setup and charging, and keep cords and power supplies where the maker says.
